Re:Works Islington reimagines Islington Central Library as a progressive laboratory for a five-year integrated design course, transforming the existing institutional, monolithic building into more human-scaled, adaptable spaces that support the evolving needs of the students. Through a network of flexible, user-centred design studios organised around a central atrium, this proposal establishes a progressive laboratory that supports collaboration and engagement across year groups and activates the public realm. A timber–concrete hybrid structural system and lightwell are deployed, amongst other strategies, to create an inclusive and adaptable educational environment that prioritises students’ needs for integrated design education.
