Convivio: A Slow Food Commons in Gergei

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 7
Year 3

Convivio refers to living and eating together; a shared meal, but also a shared social life formed through food, labour, and hospitality.

The project proposes slowness as a spatial and social act of repair for Gergei, where distance, ageing, and the erosion of everyday communal life have made this commune in the midlands of Sardinia, Italy, increasingly fragile. Rooted in the principles of Slow Food, the project brings harvesting, exchange, wine-making, cheese production, cooking, dining, and temporary stay into one shared architecture. Rather than hiding production as back-of-house labour, it makes these acts visible, participatory, and communal, allowing locals and visitors to learn through making and gather through food.

The intervention works through subtraction and reuse: the ground is excavated to reveal a lower level between two existing masses, which are reconnected by a bridge. Rammed earth, site-sourced stone, and reclaimed timber tie the new architecture to what is already there. Convivio becomes an inhabited terrain where ground, making, and gathering are continuous.

From Soil to Spoon

From Soil to Spoon

Food binds land to community, moving from soil to trade, kitchen to table. Gathered from the landscape or brought from home, it becomes a shared ritual where labour is celebrated and relationships are renewed.

Modes of Dining

Modes of Dining

The dining hall forms the social centre of the project. Elliptical table arrangements allow intimacy and collectivity to coexist, while twin telescopic oculi create natural spotlights at the two focal points for breakfast and lunch.

Rammed Earth Floor System

Rammed Earth Floor System

Excavated soil returns as architecture. The floor system turns earth from ground into structure, proposing a building culture rooted in reuse, low-energy making, and the material memory of the site.

The new structure links production, gathering and landscape within a shared ground. A hybrid timber-cable truss minimises material use, preserves views, and enhances natural ventilation to reduce summer overheating.

Bridging Ground and Community

The masterplan situates Convivio within Gergei’s wider agricultural landscape, then zooms into the spaces within the building, showing how communal life is anchored in ground, making, and shared meals.
